It pays to read the fine print

The choices of newspapers in Alice Springs is bit limited. The Advocate is a twice a week publication that is a must purchase item. It’s the primary news outlet and town and a source of endless entertainment.

Here are a few examples of why it pays to read the paper.

In fairness to the Advocate, the first item was a sales insert not something printed in the paper. At first glance it appears to be your average flyer for one of the local sporting goods stores. Upon closer inspection, it occurs to you that you might not see this ad in other places in the world.

Here’s a close up of very special shorts that are featured this week.

In last weeks paper there was a TWO PAGE feature story about a local business person who has decided to leave Alice Springs.

Yep – two pages and 8 pictures of the local madam in the Tuesday paper. The Friday paper contained a number of letters to the editors complaining about the story being featured. I’m willing to bet that they weren’t getting much lately for the op/ed section.

Despite what you think about Minnie’s profession, you can’t fault her business sense. She’s getting as much mileage out of the free publicity as possible. Here’s her ad from the issue that contained her feature story.

The advocate doesn’t hire a specialist to write headlines…

Now here’s a notice you won’t see just anywhere. In case you’re wondering what happens in a “Feral Animal Control Program”, that’s when the state government sends sharper shooters in airplanes out to shoot camels.

There’s nothing incorrect in this ad, it just reads a bit pecular for the American mind. Thank goodness there’s a picture of a ham sandwich. Other wise you might think this was one of Minnie’s ads.

There’s nothing wrong with this one either – just thought some of you might be intrigued by the concept of renting a mobile walk in cooler.

Despite what some of you may think, there are no spelling errors in the ad below.

A very wise woman once told me that life is about the story we tell at the end of the chapter. If statistics are to be believed, I’m closer to the end of my life than the beginning. I’ve quit the race to see who can have the office with best view or the most impressive job title. I’ve made peace with the fact there are some of my early dreams/goals that will never be realized. I love who I am and the women I have become AND boy do I have stories to tell!
